How video surveillance systems work

How video surveillance systems work

October 10, 2022October 10, 2022 Jose KellyHome Tips

The need to protect private property is growing every year. If until recently, video surveillance system was considered a luxury and was available only to wealthy people, the current affordable prices for equipment allow you to monitor almost any location, and all this is available without huge financial outlays.

To put it into practice for the first time, the user should become acquainted with the basic nuances of such a device as a video surveillance camera. This material will deal with this. Of course, the principle of operation of the camera is not a topic that can be described in two words, but we will try to give the most complete picture, touching on the general points of this issue.

Operating Principle

Video surveillance system can include absolutely different types of equipment, but in general it works like this: the video camera reads data and sends it to the recorder for processing. The user can see the recorded picture on the screen. The video camera can record the data or display it in real time (without recording).

There are several types of video surveillance:

  • Analog;
  • Digital.

Video surveillance on an analog system

By means of AV-cable the video camera is connected to the recorder, which is connected to the monitor. To connect such equipment to the PC directly you will need to install additional “gimmick”, namely – video capture card.

The appearance of digital devices (IP-cameras) has led to a massive displacement of analog systems, including analog television. Digital cameras offer a wide range of features, which could not fail to attract the attention of progressive users who want to always keep up with the times. What is the main difference between digital and analog systems? Described in more detail in another article – analog and digital CCTV cameras differences

For example, digital equipment is equipped with motion sensors and sound recording function. It encrypts the signal and interacts well with any other modern equipment. Developers offer their customers a variety of interesting and life-saving services which integrate perfectly with IP devices. Analog video surveillance does not boast similar options and advantages.

But this does not mean that analog video cameras have lost customer demand. Equipment of this type is a great alternative and in some specific cases is considered the best option to increase the level of security on the protected territory.

Video surveillance based on IP-cameras

Installing a digital camera does not involve any particular difficulties, because only the Internet is required for the full operation of the device. Any user can cope with the task. A video recorder is not required in this case.

The IP camera can be connected to the local network in two ways: wired (via a special cable) and wireless (via a Wi-Fi router). To configure the device, you need to assign a unique IP address to it. This can be done in the router interface.

In the case where the user wants to take the path of least resistance, he has the opportunity to connect the IP device to any convenient cloud service. With this option, he will not have to perform the above steps.

What an IP video surveillance camera consists of:

  • Lens;
  • Filter;
  • CDD Sensor;
  • Video capture device;
  • Image compression unit;
  • Processor and IP server;
  • RAM;
  • Flash memory;
  • Network connection interface;
  • Information output port (audio and video);
  • Signal inputs and outputs (notification sounds, etc.).

Installing video cameras: where is the best?

Video control devices are divided into two types: outdoor and indoor. Each user must independently determine the optimal location of cameras on the perimeter of the protected object, because in this matter everything is too individual. The most important thing is that the equipment must fulfill its direct purpose – quality and clear monitoring of the specific location.

Digital video cameras are often installed at such facilities as private houses, apartments, factories, warehouses, banks and shopping centers. The main advantage of digital video surveillance systems over analog devices is that the user can monitor what is happening in the protected area remotely. All you need is Internet access and nothing more.

If a user does not require detailed data recording at a small guarded site it is more reasonable to give preference to an analogue system. Installation of such systems should be done by a specialist. Installation with your own hands is not considered here.

In addition, you should take into account one very important point: it is better to spend more time on finding the best place to install the device with a good recording angle, because it is extremely problematic to make any adjustments to such a system. And for each innovation you will have to pay extra for the master.

And now a couple of words about what the user gets when installing modern video surveillance cameras in the protected area. The main advantages:

  • Real-time monitoring of the object, with the possibility of obtaining old data (provided that the information is recorded on the media).
  • Quick search for the information of interest in the archive through the filters. For example, the user can find all records in which the man appears in black clothing.
  • Flexible data recording settings. For example, the video camera will react only when a speaker appears in the frame. This allows you to capture only the most relevant data, and not waste time looking at records where nothing happened.
  • Possibility to store data in any convenient way (cloud service, external drive, server).

Equipment for small objects is not characterized by extensive functionality, but the basic options of the device allow you to get everything you need. Video surveillance cameras designed for installation at large sites are equipped with additional features (thermal imaging cameras, panoramic shooting mode, night mode shooting and more).

To facilitate the process of managing a large-scale video surveillance system, there is special software (there are alternatives on the network, so the user chooses the appropriate software). It can be used to make lightning-fast adjustments to the work of all installed cameras. This is very convenient and time-saving. If it is difficult to choose the software for yourself, it is recommended to consult a specialist.

Given the democracy of the current prices for video surveillance devices, the user gets at his disposal what he had only dreamed of before. Now it is commonplace to have a video surveillance system at a private property.

Smart Home: a system to control lighting and not only

Smart Home: a system to control lighting and not only

October 10, 2022October 10, 2022 Jose KellyHome Gadgets, Home Tips

Electric lighting for most of us has long been the norm, a familiar attribute of everyday life. With the onset of evening dusk, our hand habitually scrolls the wall in search of a switch, presses its button and the light floods the room – we know it should be so and feel nervous if the light bulb somehow does not turn on. However, more than a hundred years have passed since electrical outlets and switches were invented and introduced in residential homes, and they have been improved many times since then. So what features do today’s electrical outlets have in a smart home?

Smart home control system

The greatest degree of comfort for the housemates can only be achieved in one way – by building a single control system for all electrical appliances within a single building. To accomplish this task it is necessary that these appliances support a common “language” of control – for this purpose KNX technology was developed in Europe, or single receiver standard.

A common channel of communication between all the appliances existing in the house allows them to transmit and receive information from the system devices controlled by specialized programs. By the principle of operation KNX system is superficially similar to the local network communication between computers, but it is used much more widely – the signals received from the sensors are processed by system devices, the commands generated on the basis of program data analysis are sent to one executive mechanism or several at once, and upon receipt of each performer acknowledges its receipt.

Home control system based on KNX technology allows you to control all appliances at the same time by pressing a single button. Scenarios, following which the control system creates the necessary level of comfort for households, are programmed by them according to personal needs. For example, at a given time in the morning, the system will automatically open the roller shutters, activate the water heating in the boiler and turn on the electric coffee maker.

The system includes a meteorological complex that controls the temperature of the air in the rooms based on the analysis of the current state of the atmosphere outside the building: when it gets warmer, the intensity of heating decreases and the flow of outside air increases. And vice versa – with the strengthening of the wind the windows will be automatically closed by roller shutters, the air intake is reduced to a minimum.

Houses equipped with such control system can be left without fear for a vacation – electrical appliances will follow a programmed scenario, fully simulating the presence of housemates.

In addition to the advantages described above, KNX system allows you to reduce electricity costs and the cost of its payment by 1/3 – the appliances are turned on only when it is necessary.

Smart Home

Economical lighting control

Before the advent of these devices, the only way to reduce or increase the intensity of lighting was to reduce or increase the number of light bulbs of a certain wattage.

The first of them – dimmers – are designed to control the brightness of lighting, with their help you can change lighting to a more comfortable, dimming or amplifying it.

Installed in series in the electrical circuit of the lighting, dimmers can reduce the power consumption of lighting fixtures, while increasing the life of the lighting fixtures. Disadvantages of dimmers: they have a narrow specialization and are designed only for a certain type of lamp (incandescent, halogen), have different power, and the greatest does not exceed 1000 watts (the use of special amplifiers can increase the power up to 3 kW, but no more). The use of fluorescent lamps as light sources makes it difficult to control them with a dimmer, because their design includes an individual transformer. Only the largest manufacturers of electrical installation products produce dimmers for these lamps.

On the principle of control dimmers are divided into pushbutton, rotary, rotary-push and sensor. Push-button dimmers work like this: a short touch on the button turns on the light, a second touch turns it off, keeping your fingers on the button changes the brightness of the light. Rotary dimmers are controlled by turning the convex button, rotary pushbutton – light on and off is controlled by pressing the button, the intensity – its rotation. Touch dimmer switches on when you touch the surface of the light with your finger, holding a finger changes the brightness level, touching again switches the light off.

Completely abandon the switches will allow motion sensors, the principle of which is based on infrared radiation. They are usually installed in passageways, such as staircases and corridors, where it is difficult to walk in the dark and where light switches are not easy to find. As soon as a person is within the range of a motion sensor, the light turns on instantly, and as soon as the person leaves the area accessible to the infrared beam, the light turns off.

However, such sensors will not be effective if a person is standing still – the absence of motion for them means the lights have to be turned off. In this case, special devices will do – presence detectors, which activate the lights for as long as someone of the household is in the room and turn off the light when there are no people in the area of their sensors. Presence detectors are much more sensitive than motion sensors, they turn on the lights at any, even the faintest movement in their coverage area.

Depending on the model and purpose, lighting control sensors have different viewing angles. Outdoor models, whose viewing angle is usually 200-270 ° C and a range of 3-14 m, are set on the corners of buildings, the height of their location – 2 m. Home sensors are set at a height of 0.8 to 1.1 m, their viewing angle is usually 180 ° C, and the distance at which the infrared beams act – up to 12 m. The simplest models of motion and presence sensors have a small range of infrared beams, they activate lighting only when a person appears, ignoring pets, which is a definite plus. More complex models, whose lenses emit several beams of infrared rays in several directions simultaneously, monitor several sectors, for example, stairwells and partially the corridors of the first and second floors.

The motion and presence detectors allow for a period of time during which the lighting is maintained despite the cessation of movement in the infrared beam area. In addition, it is necessary to set them to a level of room illumination at which the lights do not need to be turned on, thus eliminating the activation of lighting during the daytime.

In addition to the described lighting controls, there are electrical installation products with timers and circuit breakers. The first type is designed to supply electricity for a given period of time, which is convenient, for example, in the management of lighting fixtures in the stairwells. Products of the second type are sockets that automatically cut off the power supply in case of network overload, short circuit and current leakage outside the network (into the ground).

Modern energy-saving technologies based on these products allow not only to save energy, but also to create a really comfortable environment in the house.

Types of switches

According to the principle of operation, all switches that control the lighting of our homes are the same – they close and open the electrical circuit, thus turning on and off the light in the rooms. Their difference in design, there are key switches, pushbuttons and cross-switches.

The familiar and widespread key-operated switches use the swinging principle – pressing one side closes the electrical circuit, pressing the other opens it. There are models of push-button switches with pressing on one and the same side of the key – its initial position is communicated by a spring mechanism. There are one-, two-, three- and four-way switches, the most common being the two- and one-way switches. Depending on the number of keys, these switches allow to control several light fixtures divided into groups and assigned to a given key at the same time.

Push-button switches, which activate and deactivate lights when pressed, have a mechanism that returns the button to its original position after each press. High-quality rocker switches withstand close to 60,000 pressings, i.e. they have a minimum life span of at least 20 years.

Cross-over switches are used to control turning on and off the lighting from several points inside a room simultaneously, e.g. from a suite of rooms sharing a common corridor. They can be used to turn on the light at the entrance to such a group of rooms, go through them completely and turn off the light with another switch, i.e. there is no need to return to the original switch.

All the described types of switches can be equipped with two types of LED illumination – the first type allows to easily locate the switch in a dark room and turns off when the circuit is closed, the second type of illumination acts on the contrary and turns on when the switch is activated, which allows to ensure that some remote electrical appliance (basement or street lighting, a pump, a fan, etc.) is turned on. Typically, LED backlighting is installed in the key switches, which is performed illumination of part of the key, the contour or its entire surface. Depending on the manufacturer, 2 to 5 colors are used in the backlighting.

Ways to remotely control wiring products

Almost all modern products allow you to control them with a remote control, the signal from which is transmitted by infrared beam or radio waves. Remote controls with radio control have one undoubted advantage – radio waves can freely penetrate walls, which allows you to manage the complex electric installation products of the system “smart home” without getting up from your chair, and even remotely, using the Internet and communicator (laptop).

Smart Home

Variety of designs and applications

The contact mechanism, the caliper plate and the outer panel – this is the structure of electrical installation products, which took more than 20 years to invent in the last century. Today, while maintaining the general principle of the device, their design elements have become more diverse.

The main difference between the electric sockets and switches of different manufacturers – in the way of fixing the wiring to the contact mechanism. The classic attachment of wires to the terminals of the mechanism by screwing and it is certainly reliable, if no one would use these outlets – mechanical vibrations that occur when installing or removing the plug from the socket, over time, weaken the screw clamp. In addition, copper, the most common metal used in electrical wiring, is a very malleable metal and will deform and compress over its lifetime. For these reasons, the contact between the electric wire and the mechanism of the socket weakens, gaps appear, resulting in the body of the electric socket is noticeably heated.

To solve this problem, manufacturers electroadjusting products have modified the design of the contact mechanism outlets – the connection remains a screw, with stripped wire entered into a special window, and then tighten the screw.

There is another way to connect the wires to the socket mechanism, different from the screw connection – a unit with a clamp, the wires are held tightly by special terminals with springs. The force with which the wire is fixed in the clamp is precisely calculated, i.e. it is impossible to under or over tighten such a connection. In addition, the quick-clamping unit, unlike the screw connection, is able to dampen mechanical vibrations due to the springs installed in it. Since it is not necessary to loosen and retighten the connections between the contact mechanism of the socket with a quick-clamp unit, it reduces the number of operations performed during the installation of a socket, and thus reduces installation time – press the terminal, put the wire, loosen the pressure and the wire is securely fastened. Such sockets are most useful if the wiring is made by a rigid solid wire – to bring a bare flexible wire in the clamp will not be easy.

Most models of wiring products from different manufacturers are designed for a standard depth of 50 mm mounting box (cylindrical recess in the wall) – they have a mechanism with a thickness of about 30 mm. At the same time, produced models of electrical outlets with a smaller thickness of the mechanism – in the range of 20 mm, which greatly facilitates installation work, because in the cavity of the box is more room for laying the wires.

Contact mechanism of modern sockets and switches is fixed on a plastic base, whose material contains a number of special additives that increase resistance to heat, durability, UV resistance, selfextinguishing in case of fire, preventing the accumulation of dust. The higher the cost of a particular product, the more it has the described properties. Depending on the manufacturer, brushes (current-conducting parts of products) are made of ordinary, tinned or silver-plated brass – the latter have the highest characteristics, but the cost of the product, the construction of which they are included, is the highest. Often the brushes in electrical outlets are made of two parts – it is necessary that their design contains means of tight coupling of these parts, nevertheless, cheap outlets do not have such means. Electrical outlets of the largest manufacturers are equipped with additional protection of current-carrying elements – they are covered with a layer of insulation, which provides complete safety for people, even if the decorative outer panel of the outlets will be removed, for example, during the work of wallpapering or painting the walls.

Metal or plastic support provides a reliable fixation electroadjusting products in the mounting box – after clamping the screws its feet with two teeth on each are expanded into vertical grooves, made around the perimeter of the box. In terms of reliability, the metal support is more effective, especially for sockets.

The product line of the largest manufacturers of electrical outlets necessarily includes products for children’s rooms – outlets equipped with protective curtains that cover the contact holes when they are not being used. The shutters open either when a special contact of the plug comes into contact with the corresponding contact of the socket or when the plugs are simultaneously inserted into both contact openings. There are two types of safety curtains: push up; clockwise rotating. In both cases, a special spring is used to retract the shutter when the plug is pulled out.

In addition to the usual power outlets for electrical appliances, there are so-called signal sockets designed to transmit a signal for a television, telephone or computer. A classic representative of electric installing devices of this type were widely known in the days of the USSR radio sockets, today no longer in use. Such products can be designed to transmit only a particular signal, for example, television or telephone, or be multifunctional, i.e. at the same time have outputs for telephone or television plugs. The signal sockets can be equipped with shutters that protect their contact mechanism from dust particles.

Design of wiring products

As mentioned above, the material for their bodies, buttons, keys and front panels is plastic, additives in the composition of which increase resistance to mechanical and thermal wear, resistance to ultraviolet rays.

The main colors of plastic – white and white with a cream color, also called “ivory”. In addition to the basic color scheme produced models of products in different colors – from pastel to piercingly bright, for example, sapphire or platinum. The largest manufacturers include in their production line products made of wood – maple, beech, cherry, oak, and so on. – treated with flame retardants. Key and frame switches can be made of ceramic, glass and metal, and plastic products – faced with leather and artificial stone (for example, marble).

The standard form of wiring products – square or rounded corners of the frame, round or square button. However, there are models with an oval key, different widths of the frame around it, the front panel can be not only flat, but also convex, in the form of a sail.

Sound alarm system: varieties, features

October 10, 2022October 10, 2022 Jose KellyHome Tips

A reliable means of protecting your home from unwanted intrusion is a sound alarm system. When it is triggered, there is a loud siren sound, which scares away intruders, attracts the attention of others, as well as transmits information about the intrusion to the security desk.

Types of acoustic intruder alarms

There are the following types of alarm systems:

  • wired;
  • wireless;
  • addressed;
  • autonomous;
  • with output to a security console.

Each type has advantages and disadvantages, peculiarities of use, differences in composition and operation.

Wired alarm system is considered the most common and reliable. It differs in a small cost of equipment. If the object of protection is small and it is possible to lay a cable, this type is the most suitable.

Addressable system is suitable for both small and large premises. Information about the state of the sensors is transmitted by radio channel or with the help of wires. The price for installation and maintenance of this type of alarm system is low, but you need to spend money to purchase equipment.

The wireless alarm system uses only a radio channel to transmit data, which is not always convenient. It is characterized by a high cost of equipment with a small range. Sometimes there can be interference in operation.

The autonomous system does not provide for the transmission of a notification to the guard desk. This type of sirens has a low efficiency compared to the one that outputs the signal to the monitoring station.

Peculiarities of acoustic sirens

The purpose of installing such sounders is to prevent illegal intrusion into private territory. When an intruder intrudes, a loud sound appears, to which the watchman will respond and notify the neighbors. The information can be transmitted to a special service. Such a system is more often installed in holiday homes and in the surrounding area.

You can use any motion detectors, but people often choose sensors with an infrared sensor. They are more reliable than ultrasonic ones and cheaper than microwave ones. These detectors have a horizontal detection zone of 10-15 m and a 90-120° view.

Design and operation

Sound security detectors consist of motion sensors, control unit (module) and a siren. Sensors are constantly in standby mode, controlling the space. When motion appears, they are triggered and send a signal to the receiving and control module. A rechargeable battery is used to power this node.

Then the module sends information to the executive device. A loud siren sounds. Some security systems additionally turn on the lights, which increases the effectiveness of the protection. Information about the intrusion is transmitted to the security desk or to the cell phone number of the owner of the object.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantages of sound sirens:

  • Sirens emit a harsh sound that is unpleasant to humans. It is impossible to be near the loudest models.
  • “Howler” will be heard by the guard, neighbors or passersby.
  • The installed obfuscator reduces the risk of intrusion, because the intruder does not know if it works.
  • There is a large selection of models of varying cost. Everyone can buy the equipment at a price they can afford.
  • Anyone can install a security system on their own.

If the motion sensor and siren are different devices connected by a cable, an intruder can detect the security system, disable it.

Sound alarm

Selection Criteria

Regardless of the characteristics, all products must meet these criteria:

The equipment must have a certificate. This indicates that it is suitable for the conditions of this area.

There should be documentation of the tests carried out, the quality of products.

It is necessary to pay attention to the appearance of the product. There should be no dents, scratches or other defects.

If possible, it is better to buy an expensive model with a loud sound.

The device with a moisture-proof housing can be installed not only inside the house, but also outside, which increases the degree of protection against penetration.

In the absence of electrical power it is necessary to buy a diesel generator or a battery.

Installing a sound burglar alarm is an effective method of increasing security. The equipment does not require complicated installation and maintenance. The main thing is to choose the right one.

The smart home system: what it consists of, how it works, and how it can be useful

October 10, 2022October 10, 2022 Jose KellyHome Tips

Smart systems are slowly but surely making their way into our homes, and what 25 years ago was considered fiction is now firmly embedded in our everyday lives.

Remember the bachelor pad of Corben Dallas, the protagonist of Besson’s 1997 “The Fifth Element”? The smart alarm clock that knows when the owner needs to go to work, the smart lock without the classic key, and the voice assistant that can both order pizza and alert you to a breakdown. At the time, we thought it was just a figment of a talented filmmaker’s imagination.

Today we’re going to talk about the smart home. We’ll talk about how it works, what it can do, and why its popularity has grown.

What is a smart home system?

In the classic sense, the “smart home” is a single information system, all parts of which interact with each other as a whole. Elements and household items are interconnected and controlled by a single control center, i.e. an artificial intelligence, like Jarvis, the virtual butler of Tony Stark from the movie “Iron Man. The control center automates household processes and is responsible for aspects such as: lighting, thermoregulation, safety and comfort. It can make coffee and draw a bath just in time for you to wake up, or call the police if a burglar breaks into the house. Or analyze the amount of food in the fridge and place your own orders in the store. The task of the homeowner is just to install and set up his “butler” correctly.

A truly canonical smart home is too complicated to install. It is laid down at the design stage of the house, and it is expensive to buy all the components and install. Let’s take a closer look at what goes into smart devices and how they function.

How it works

The set for a “smart” house consists of a controller (control hub) and several sensors. Usually there are no more than five. The hub works via Wi-Fi. So it controls the sensors, and they, in turn, collect information from the external environment and transmit to the main controller. Sets of devices that are on the market are quite single-tasking – you won’t find a system to control everything. Each of them has a clearly defined functionality. For example, only lighting or control of household appliances.

Some devices are mains-powered, and some are wireless battery-powered. In the first case, be prepared for malfunctions after power surges, while in the second case, do not forget to charge the batteries in time. The systems can be controlled using the buttons on the control unit, a remote control or an app on your smartphone. And if you still want to combine your devices under one umbrella, try a “smart” remote or speaker. They integrate easily with almost all devices.

What a smart home can do

“What do I need all these gadgets in my apartment for?” – you ask. And we’ll answer: “For your comfort and safety. In fact, the list of features of smart devices is wide. Let’s take a look at the main and most popular functions.

Security

A smart security system will not only protect your home from unauthorized entry by third parties. Its sensitive sensors can help detect

  • a gas leak;
  • fire;
  • flooding.

Then, depending on your settings, the controller will either send a notification to your phone or call the police, fire department, or emergency services. The functionality of particularly advanced sets includes:

  • lock management – locks locks and opening on command;
  • lighting – the device controls the lighting when no one is home, thus simulating the presence of the owners;
  • multimedia control – forbidden channels are blocked on TV when children are present.

Lighting

You can install sensors, smart outlets, lamps throughout the apartment and forget what a switch is. The system can be customized to your tastes:

  • to turn the lights on at 8 a.m. and off at 11 a.m;
  • or when you walk into a room;
  • or by voice command and pressing a button on your smartphone.

According to PricewaterhouseCoopers, this approach reduces energy costs by about 40 percent.

Electric appliance control

The main task of this system is to maximize user comfort. With its help, you can, for example, set the time when you will be absent. The controller will turn off all appliances while no one is home, and when you return it will turn on the coffee machine. You can start a robot vacuum cleaner or a dishwasher and boil water in the kettle directly from your smartphone while you are at work. Or set a timer, and the same robot itself will start cleaning every day at a strictly defined time.

Thermoregulation

Rather difficult to install, but a useful option. The system keeps a sharp eye on the temperature in the room: it gives you heat if it’s too cold in the rooms, or turns on the air conditioner if the temperature has risen above normal. If no one is home, the controller turns off all appliances. As with lighting, this reduces gas and electricity costs and saves money for more enjoyable expenses.

Reasons for the increase in sales

The reason for this strong growth, analysts saw not anywhere, but in the very covid-19 epidemic that swooped in in 2020 and put us all in our homes. Trapped within four walls, people began to think about their comfort and look for solutions that would make confinement a little more enjoyable. After all, it’s great when the light turns on by itself, it is only necessary to go into the kitchen, and the smart speaker tells jokes and helps to choose a movie for the evening. Another category of recluse, who hid from the ubiquitous infection in the country houses, also interested in the “smart” system, but in a different way. For weeks, empty apartments could become easy prey to intruders. Therefore, people began to install alarm systems, motion detectors and cameras that allowed them to monitor the situation in the house remotely.

The quarantine ended and the systems remained – people tried the comfortable life and began to recommend the “smart” house to their friends and relatives.

Advantages and disadvantages

At last let’s briefly discuss pros and cons of smart home system, which it has, as well as any other innovative technology.

Advantages

  • significant savings on the cost of utilities;
  • automation of routine and, as a consequence, free time that can be spent on your favorite hobby;
  • additional protection.

Disadvantages

  • high price – even the Chinese components are several times more expensive than their “nonintellectual” counterparts;
  • possible failures – the system operation is tied to a Wi-Fi connection. If your provider has an accident and the Internet in the house loses, most of the functions will stop working.
